Travel + Leisure has named Sandhamn one of the world's hidden paradise islands. We take you there and back in a day, on your own yacht.
The route
Leave Stockholm
We pick you up wherever suits you and welcome you aboard. As Stockholm slips behind us, Captain Kaj points out the sights, if you'd like a guide. We cruise right over the spot where the warship Vasa sank on her maiden voyage in 1628, past grand waterfront houses with stories of their own.
Skurusundet
We head out through the green, narrow Skurusundet, with fine views of the houses along the water.
Baggensstäket
We pass the historic waters of Baggensstäket. Here, in 1719, a small band of Swedish soldiers stopped a far larger Russian fleet from reaching Stockholm.
Kolström and Strömma canal
Next comes Kolström, a passage so narrow you can almost touch the gardens. At Strömma canal we wait a moment for the bridge to swing open, then pass under the Djurö bridge and head out towards the open sea and Sandhamn.
Sandhamn
After about three hours we moor in Sandhamn's lively harbour. Here you can go ashore to stroll the sandy lanes or enjoy lunch at one of the island's restaurants. Meals ashore are not included in the charter price.
A different way home
We take another route back, past the island of Grinda and historic Vaxholm, close by its 16th-century fortress, and through the beautiful, narrow Stegesund. Total time is 6 to 8 hours.
